FICTION NARRATIVE #2 • SEPTEMBER 25, 2025
As noted in the 09.24.25 email to 5G parents:
We want students to take pride in their work, and we thus do not "take a red pen to each and every mistake."
This is a sure way to turn young students off writing.
We want our young writers to LOVE WRITING!
Instead, we keep a list of common spelling and grammatical mistakes and we deal with them in a context quite separate from their Amazing Pieces of Writing (which are to be celebrated for the great effort that has gone into them).
We go over spelling and grammar issues in many of our small groups.
Recently, we reviewed some basic phonics (e.g., why does "spotted" have 2 Ts and not just one?).
Students particularly like it when collective "mistakes" find their way into a Kahoot!
If we are successful, students never feel their writing has been criticized AND the learn the phonics, spelling, grammar, writing structure, etc. they need to learn.
Enjoy!
