WHAT TO BRING



• Haleakala: 10,000 feet — yes, it’s cold up there!


BIG PICTURE


  • Everything will be carry on:

    • you must be able to carry all your things

    • any liquids or gels must be travel size (3 oz or less)

    • no rolling suitcases — this is a short trip

  • Bring only what’s necessary for comfort & safety

    • Please do not overpack

  • Pack your own bags so you know where things are 

  • To answer any TSA questions:

    • School ID — to be carried by students in their backpacks

    • Photocopy of birth certificate — to be carried by Dr. Cat


DUFFEL BAG

This will be a carry-on item
You
must be able to carry your own duffel bag without help


CLothing — WARM:

  • 3-4 shirts (PE and Pumpkin Festival shirts, appropriate free choice

  • 2-3 pairs of shorts

  • 6 sets of underclothing

CLothing — cold & WET:

  • 1-2 heavy sweatshirts and/or coat for Haleakala — see photo above

  • 1 pair of heavy/warm pants for Haleakala

  • Hooded rain jacket or rain poncho

  • Beanie, warm hat

FOOTWEAR:

  • 1 pair of athletic shoes

    • these may get dirty

    • wear them on the plane to save space

  • 1 pair of slippers

  • 3 pairs of socks

    • 1 thick/warm pair for Haleakala

water WEAR:

  • Swimsuit

  • Cover up

  • Small beach towel

  • Water wings for the pool

sun, insects & MEDICATIONS:

  • Sunscreen

    • must be travel-size (3 oz or less)

    • all luggage will be carry on

  • Bug spray or bug-repellent wipes

    • must be travel-size (3 oz or less)

  • Sea-sickness/motion-sickness medication for van and boat, if needed

  • Necessary medication(s)

  • Personal first aid kit: small kits are sold at most drugstores; keep it simple

NIGHT ITEMS:

  • Pajamas

  • Pillow case — provided pillow cases may not be great

  • Travel-size toiletry items: shampoo, toothbrush and paste, brush, lotion etc.

  • Travel-size personal hygiene items: e.g., deodorant

  • Plastic bag for dirty/wet clothing

GEAR:

  • Underwater cameras (optional)

  • Small flashlight for Haleakala

  • Light weight water bottle for hiking

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • Special snacks (optional)


BACKPACK

This will be a carry-on item
You
must be able to carry your own duffel bag without help


  • School ID

  • Mask(s): optional but highly recommended on the plane

    • If you get sick, a parent must come get you

  • Pen and/or pencil

  • Book: good for 3 days of quiet reading

  • An extra set of clothes in a ziplock bag (in case of rain, mud, accidents of any kind)

  • Spending money: please don’t send more than $50

  • A prepackaged snack for the first day on/after the flight

    • No liquids

    • Think healthy & nutritious!

  • Inexpensive digital camera or disposable camera, and/or Underwater Camera

    • Optional

    • Consider an inexpensive camera that may get lost or damaged

    • Students do step on each other, trip over their feet, etc.

  • Prescribed medications (Rx)

  • Motion sickness? — in the past, some students have gotten motion sickness ascending & descending Haleakala, as well as on the boat to/from Molokini

  • All medication instructions:

    • Printed, not hand written

    • Student name at top, ideally large and in bold

    • Clear administration directions, including who is authorized to give Rx to your student
