Ka’ena Point is a wildlife sanctuary on the northwest tip of O’ahu.
We timed this visit near sun down when, we hoped, the Wedged-Tailed Shearwater parents would be flying in with grub for their chicks, and thus the chicks would be inclined to come to the mouth of their burrows to see what was for supper. (Regurgitated fish.) We lucked out!
It’s remarkable that the chicks sat just a few feet from the path. The bird strutting beneath “Ka’ena Point” is a kolea (Pacific Plover). Kolea winter in Hawai’i, but nest in Alaska!
